As the calendar turns, we often get asked about new trends in design and tile for the year ahead. While we are a fan of classic, sophisticated designs that last for many years, following current trends can help ensure your home stays fresh and inviting.
As you select tile for your home remodeling projects, we’ve tapped into the expertise of our designers to share the most sought-after looks.

Trend 1: Indoor Meets Outdoor
This year people are still craving that connection to the outdoors that we saw heavily in 2022. Selecting colors that can be found in nature or tile that blends indoors and out is a big theme in the new year. Natural materials such as luxurious marble, granite, slate, travertine, onyx, and limestone are elegant additions for any home. Other popular choices are timeless terracotta and even wood-look tile, both which give your space a slightly rustic, yet comfortable feel and bring authenticity into the space.

Trend 2: Textured Tile
Creating a feeling in your home that is natural and authentic goes beyond color and size and even extends into the texture of the materials used. Tactile or textured tile is popping up everywhere with homeowners gravitating toward tile that is more irregular and organic than the sleek and smooth finishes of the past. This creates a beautiful, sculptured effect that adds visual interest and depth to a room.

Trend 3: Handmade Tile
Taking the natural, authentic theme even further is show-stopping handmade tile. While this look gained popularity a few years ago, it is becoming even more desirable to incorporate handmade and natural elements. Here, no two tiles are alike, which results in an organic and artisanal look.

Trend 4: Unexpected Shapes & Orientation
A unique contrast to the serene trends we’ve noted above is the desire to incorporate bold and unexpected elements, in all areas of design. Typically, people gravitate to color when making a bold choice, but the shape of your tile can also be a great way to add a unique, unexpected element to your home. Whether a picket, hexagon, ellipsis, or other unique shape – experimenting with various forms is all the rage. Other ways to embrace this trend can be switching the orientation of how your tile is set such as a vertical layout for a traditional classic rectangle that would normally be horizontal or even considering large, oversized shapes. Playing with size and scale can be another way to add a bold statement. Large format tile can be seen everywhere from bathrooms and laundry rooms to backsplashes and flooring.

Trend 5: Artisan Statements
Speaking of going bold, homeowners and designers are leaning into tile as a way to make an artisan statement – whether in a small or large space. Incorporating decorative patterns and mosaics can turn an otherwise boring area into a work of art. This trend is popping up in the form of statement backsplashes and other nooks of the home. From floral and patterned styles to art deco or mosaic-inspired looks, incorporating artisan tile helps create a dramatic effect, especially to offset an otherwise neutral color palette.

Trend 6: Timeless Checkerboard
While a checkerboard layout will always be a timeless choice, the last few years it has been extremely prominent in design. This year, it is showing with a softer spin. Muted, monochromatic color schemes in a checkerboard pattern are gaining popularity as they are softer than the high-contrast designs of the past and add a subtle elegance to the space. This can be a great way to try out a new trend while also sticking to a tried-and-true neutral palette.
Regardless of which trend you want to try in the year ahead, taking inventory of your existing space and making sure it works with your home and your style is key. Trends come and go, but at the end of the day, you are the one that has to love it. Finding something that compliments your style and adds a touch of modern elegance can be a great way to refresh a space in a way that works for you and your family.
